The Mills Group specializes in the restoration of historic buildings and the design of new residences which reflect the rich architectural character of the past and vernacular design with traditional architecture influence. The firm provides consulting services that include downtown revitalization master planning, contextual infill design, existing building assessment, conceptual design for rehabilitation, and building maintenance strategies.

Michael Mills

Michael Mills, AIA, NCARB - Principal Architect

Michael Mills, AIA, NCARBMichael is the founding principal of the Mills Group-Architecture, Planning, and Preservation. He is has thirteen years of experience in historical preservation, architectural design, and planning. Through his extensive work with historic structures, he has a detailed working knowledge of the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Historic Preservation Projects. The other aspects of his work include historic design guidelines and the issues related the revitalization of main streets across the country. He leads the Mills Group with his guiding philosophy of balancing the "social-economic-environmental-physical" aspects of our built environment, leading to responsible and well-thought out design.

Greg Cress


Greg CressGreg Cress, originally from Morgantown, WV, has been working with Mills Group for over a year. Currently, he is completing his Bachelor's of Science in Architecture at Fairmont State University and plans to pursue further education within the next year. Most recently, he has worked on projects including the restoration of the Delmonte Hotel and the remodel of Grand Vue pool building, as well as multiple house designs. Greg is thankful for the rewarding opportunities that Mills Group has provided him and looks forward to working on future projects.

Melissa Stover


Melissa StoverMissy Stover is a new addition to the Mills Group team. She is originally from the Lima, Ohio area and recently earned her Bachelor of Arts in Architecture degree from Miami University (of Ohio). Previously she worked for a large firm in Dallas on the corporate design team. However, she compares the knowledge that she has already learned from first-hand experience at the Mills Group as invaluable to furthering her career in architecture. Missy comments on the Mills Group atmosphere by saying, "I truly enjoy the close knit nature of our firm and am fortunate for the learning experiences I would not otherwise have the opportunity to gather as a young professional."

Ryan Hess


Ryan HessRyan Hess joins the Mills Group after extensive education in the fields of architecture, business, and engineering. He is a 2009 graduate of Carnegie Mellon University's School of Architecture, where he earned a Master of Architecture degree researching total building performance and sustainable solutions for the built environment. Upon graduation, Ryan became a LEED AP with the United States Green Building Council. Prior to post graduate study at Carnegie Mellon, he earned a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering degree at West Virginia University. At the Mills Group, Ryan will be giving direction to sustainable design throughout the firm's projects to serve the market demand for sustainable development and redevelopment.
